The GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) exam is a standardized test that is conducted annually for admission to postgraduate engineering programs at institutes of national importance in India, such as the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), National Institute of Technology (NIT), and Indian Institute of Science (IISc). The exam is conducted in an online (computer-based) format and is held for a total of 23 subjects, known as "papers."

Part 1-A general aptitude section that consists of two parts:
Verbal Ability: This section tests a candidate's ability to understand and comprehend written English. It consists of questions on grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension.
Numerical Ability: This section tests a candidate's ability to solve numerical problems and reason mathematically. It consists of questions on arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data interpretation.
Part 2-A technical section that consists of questions specific to the chosen paper.
The exam duration is 3 hours and it consists of a total of 65 questions carrying a total of 100 marks. The questions in the GATE exam are of multiple-choice and numerical answer type. The multiple-choice questions have four options, out of which only one option is correct. The numerical answer type questions have a numerical answer, which needs to be entered using the virtual keyboard on the computer screen.
It is important to note that the GATE exam is a competitive exam and the marks scored by a candidate are used for the purpose of short listing candidates for admission to postgraduate engineering programs and for fellowships awarded by the Ministry of Education.
